Week 1 - ??? About Shoes

So, let's talk about this shoe thing.

Just a quick recap: I did my first day of C25K on Sunday. Monday morning I woke up and felt great. I put on a cute little number and went to work feeling very proud of myself and was ready to move on to day 2.

Day 2 came and my shins were KILLING ME! I was in SOOOO much pain and the first thing that came to mind as a cause were my running shoes. I didn't have them professionally fitted but I did feel very comfy running in them so I wasn't that concerned. However, I kept reading on MFP and WebMD that I most likely had shin splints caused by my running. Here is where I got sucked in. I was convinced beyond a reasonable doubt that my running shoes were the cause of my shin pain. I did the recommended stretches, ran slowly around the bl0ck a couple of times, and called it a day. MOST IMPORTANTLY - I skipped my 2nd day of C25K I repeat...I SKIPPED MY 2nd DAY OF C25K. I was bummed...mostly because I had made a commitment to myself but also because I would have to go out and fork over more dough to get a better pair of shoes.

So, this morning I got up, still bummed that I didn't run yesterday and low and behold a lightbulb went off in my head. ding ding ding! I think my shin pain is from the nasty shoes I wore on MONDAY!!!!! Remember said "cute little number"? Well, that went from head to toe including a pair of hard-to-walk-in brown heals that had me struggling to walk at the end of the day!

EUREKA! I may be able to salvage my new running shoes yet! Of course...this is after my legs heal from those awful-horrible-painful shoes.

Week 1 - Day 1

Well I DID IT! My first day of C25K is complete!

The Day: Cloudy, Misting, around 55 degrees, and a pretty powerful West wind.

My Route: Didn't plan out...15 min out and 15 min back.

My Final Time/Mileage: 31 minutes and 1.75 miles (probably a tad more as I kept running back and forth in the same spot to watch an otter in the neighborhood pond)

My Thoughts:

Well, I went out on Saturday and stocked up on running gear. I got a brand new pair of Asics running shoes. The cost was about $69 for the pair. They only had one pair that came is wides so I opted for those. They fit pretty well on the left foot but the right foot has my heel rubbing on the shoe. Only one blister though so I consider that a victory!

I also got a pair of acrylic/polyester blend running socks at about $10 for 2 pair. There was also a sale on Reebok outdoor gear so I got running pants and a long sleeve mock turtle neck for $45. Overall I was pleased with my purchases. As it was unseasonably warm yesterday I didn't get to test their full strength. That'll come on Saturday when it's 30deg in Northern Michigan. Woohoo!

I also let my pups down and decided not to run with them. Being that it was my first try and they're not quite acclimated to running either, I thought it best to leave them out of the mess. Tomorrow, however, one of them is coming with me...probably Sam as he has the most energy of the two.

Back to the run. My first week is as follows: 5 min walking warm-up followed by alternating 60 sec run with 90 sec walk for 20 minutes. I didn't have a single issue...no wonder this plan works. The wind proved slightly difficult but overall it wasn't so huge that I couldn't run.

That's my story...tomorrow is Day 2. Looking forward to it!

C25K Challenge

I don't want to write about me today so I'm going to write about running...

So here's the plan. I don't run but, if you read my last entry you'd know that I need a challenge, so I decided to do the C25K program. (you can find the complete plan here: http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml)

I am heading out this weekend to get a good pair of running shoes and some good outerwear. I've done a bit of research and have decided on a good pair of acrylic socks and some gore-tex pants and overcoat. The exact style and color are yet to be determined.

Week 1 Day 1 begins on Sunday with a 2nd walk/run on Tuesday. My next week will be slightly skewed as I am walking a 5k on Thursday morning with a bunch of friends. I will consider that a general workout and then continue with the C25K on Saturday.

The first workout consists of a "brisk five-minute warmup walk" followed by alternating "60 seconds of jogging and 90 seconds of walking for a total of 20 minutes". With warm up and cool down, including stretching I'll be doing a 30 minute work out. I hope Sam can handle it!

My Pre-1st Day Post

Hello Friends! Well, ok, let's be real...who really wants to read about me and my journey to become a runner. I can't promise fun, wit, humor, or even sense...but, I will post my progress as what it is. Maybe along the way the dogs will trip me or something...I'm sure it will happen at some point right?

Anywho, about me.

My name is Kate. I am a 30 yr old married female who has struggled with exercise her entire life. I've never been particularly thin although I'm always told my stomach is super flat...LoVe It!! I currently stand at 5ft 7.5in and weigh in at 153lbs after a particularly bad flu over the past week. My normal weight is around 160lbs although I've been trying to lose. I abhor exercise...really abhor it. I walk my dogs because I have to and the idea of "loving" or "becoming addicted" has never even crossed my mind.

I'm really your typical suburban housewife minus the kids (I may get in to that in later blogs...). I wake up at 4:40am, get ready for work, walk the dogs, make my lunch (and sometimes my husbands) and am out the door by 5:45am. My train leaves the station at 6:12am and I'm in downtown Chicago at 7:35am where I then walk the 3 blocks to my office. I sit in class all day (I'm in training until February) and then leave at 4:30pm. Catch the 4:50pm train and am back at home around 6:15pm, where I take the dogs for a walk, feed them, make dinner, eat said dinner, clean the kitchen, and maybe watch about an hour of television before heading to bed around 9pm. WOW...that sounds pathetic. I am a robot...

So, in order to spice up my life I decided I wanted to lose weight. I needed a challenge. My high in August was 168 and my pants were tight, etc etc etc...SOOOO, I joined myfitnesspal.com, a free, awesome, calorie counting, support group, forum type website. I found that I was instantly addicted and lost 4.5lbs in just a couple of weeks. Now, since then I've had a few ebbs and flows but overall feel better about myself!! (yeah for me!) I have more energy and am finding that I'm enjoying life more.

This is where things get tough...for me anyways...I decided I need more of a challenge. I've lost my goal weight of 10lbs and needed somewhere to go from there. Of course, now I want to lose more weight but, in order to do this I need to cut more calories and incorporate more exercise. I set my first fitness challenge fairly high back in September...CLIMB THE SEARS (now Willis) TOWER! I was freaked out but knew I could do it! Well, no build up here...I couldn't do it. I raised the money, got my participants package, and was all ready to go...until...well, I got the flu. Let me tell you how devistating this was...I...NEVER...GET...THE...FLU!!!! I was DESTROYED!!! I cried for an hour and then puked...I was so close to doing something that I worked hard for...I was ready to push myself to the limit...I was soooo proud just thinking about it....damned flu...

So, it's getting to be the end of the day and I now realized I've been typing for quite some time. I must run but promise to continue later...not that I'm positive you care...but thanks if you do...
